Description: Haviland & Co 2 Salad Plates 7 1/2" Hand Painted Fruits w/Gold 1894-1931 Limoges Exquisite Decorative 2 Salad PLATES, 7 1/2" Ranson Blank #1 and Gold Trimmed on RIM, Hand Painted, Red Strawberries and Red & White Currants, circa 1894-1931, from Limoges, France DESCRIPTION: The plates were skillfully hand painted by a talented artist The fruits are in a large spray across the edge of the plates with the green leaves falling towards the center of the plates. The Ranson mold is scalloped and embossed on the rim. The artist enhanced the rim with a band of gold. The strawberries and currants are very realistic looking. The overall quality of the design is quite professional and beautiful to behold. CONDITION: The condition of this decorative plate set is superb with one exception. The currant plate has a very small rim flake. See photo #10 for an enlarged view of this. We can find no defects or other damage. There is no gold wear. There is no rubbing to the paint. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this plate set is. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 7 1/2” with a height of 7/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. The underglaze mark (in green) on this is mark #12 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1894-1931.
