Marshall, contains fully-intact white paper seal, one page, measures 23 by 19 inches, created in Washington, DC on August 11, 1948, and in very fine condition with only three strips of tape on the verso from previous mounting. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY HARRY S. TRUMAN AS PRESIDENT APPOINTING WARREN R. AUSTIN AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS Warren Austin (1877-1962) was an American politician and diplomat who served as a U.S. Senator from Vermont between 1931 to 1946 and as the Assistant Minority Leader from 1939 to 1942. He resigned from the Senate to accept Truman’s appointment to the United Nations. Austin held that post from 1947 until the start of the Eisenhower administration in early 1953. While with the U.N., he witnessed several significant Cold War events, such as the creation of Israel, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, and the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He was succeeded by Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. In the present document, President Truman requests Ambassador Austin to attend the third session of the U.N. General Assembly in Paris in 1948 where the famous Universal Declaration of Human Rights document was adopted (of which, Eleanor Roosevelt was chair of the committee that drafted it). President appointments for Truman’s cabinet are virtually unobtainable and highly desirable. PRESIDENT TRUMAN REQUESTS AMBASSADOR AUSTIN TO ASSIST WITH THE ADOPTION OF THE FAMOUS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS Reads in part: “Know Ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity and Ability of Warren R. Austin of Vermont, I do appoint him a Representative of the United States of America to the Third Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, to be held in Paris France, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of this commission.”
