Great White Shark WHITE SHARK, Carcharias carcharias (now also Great White Shark, White Pointer, Man-eater, White Death, Carcharodon carcharias). Colour printed wood engraving by Benjamin Fawcett, pl. 5 from Vol. 1 of J. Couch's A History of the Fishes of the British Islands, 1862-65. The star of Peter Benchley's book and Steven Spielberg's filmJaws finds a place in Couch's book on British fish on the slightest of evidence, a vague report that 'several others have been seen in Mount's Bay, Cornwall - . . and one, which was seen by a gentleman who had often observed the White Shark in the West Indies, and was pronounced by him to be of the same species.' His pronouncement was probably inaccurate because there have been no reliable records of it appearing in British waters since. Despite the hysteria engendered by Jaws, however, shark attacks are rare. Indeed, perhaps no more than 50 people world wide are killed by sharks of all kinds in a year. As we kill about five million sharks annually who are the real aggressors?
