It was the most widely circulated magazine in the period before the Civil War. The magazine was published by Louis A. Godey. Each issue contained poetry, articles and engravings created by prominent writers and other artists of the time. Although the magazine was read and contained work by both men and women, it could only contain original, American manuscripts, and published three special issues every year that only included work done by women. The magazine is best known for the hand-tinted fashion plates that appeared at the start of each issue, which provided a record of the progression of women's dress. It would also include a garment illustration and pattern to be sewn at home as well as a sheet of the most recent music for the piano. Edgar Allen Poe had one of his earliest short stories, "The Visionary" (later renamed "The Assignation") printed in Godey's in 1834. He also published several other works in the magazine. Magazine editor Sarah Hale used her role to influence various causes. She used the magazine, for example, to advocate for the education of women. Some of her articles focused on writing techniques and offered reading lists similar to those offered to college students, but Godey hated putting anything political into the magazine and refused to even acknowledge that there was a Civil War going on. This ultimately cost him readership since people had to go elsewhere for news on the war. After 48 years, the magazine published its last issue in 1878.
