The scene may well depict a friary or religious poorhouse. Signed in the plate. On watermarked laid. Condition In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some surface dirt and discolouration, and a small loss to the lower left corner. The etching has been cropped to the plate lines.Collection Information From a small collection of etchings by the French artist and illustrator George Montbard (1841-1905).Biography George Montbard (1841-1905) was a French artist, illustrator and caricaturist, born Charles Auguste Loye in Montbard, France. He worked as an illustrator and caricaturist on Chronique Illustré, and then in 1868 for the Illustrated London News. After being involved in the Paris Commune in 1871 he was proscribed in France and moved to England, where he contributed to The Graphic, Judy, Funny Folks (including "Comic Fancy Page", 1874), and many other magazines including Vanity Fair. In 1882 Vincent van Gogh, who was also working for the Illustrated London News, mentioned receiving sketches by him of the Channel Islands. He was buried in Brittany on 5th August 1905.
