Description: By the hand of early Plein Air master artist GEORGE KENNEDY BRANDRIFF (1890-1936), a small but pretty and highly impressionistic painting, "San-Bernardino--Mt. Baldy", circa late 1920's. The oil on canvas laid on board measures 10 1/4" by 12" (15" by 16 1/2" in contemporary gold frame). The artist's estate stamp signature appears at lower left; on the reverse is written in old hand "Brandriff/San Bernardino"; and the rectangular David & Sons estate stamp for Brandriff is at left. The provenance chain of the work is as follows: Francis Brandriff (widow of the artist) sold to dealer David & Sons, Laguna Beach, CA, circa 1975; to private collector, Mansfield, Texas, circa 1977; re-sold to dealer David & Sons. David & Sons offered the work at John Moran auction, March 2018, estimate $2/3000 (unsold). Brandriff was born in New Jersey in 1890 and was in Orange, CA as a young man in 1913. By 1918 he had opened a dental office in Hemet, near Palm Springs, but only ten years later abandoned dentistry so as to pursue art full time. Mostly self-taught, he took some lessons from Anna Hills, Carl Oscar Borg, and Jack Wilkinson Smith. Brandriff built a studio home in Laguna Beach, taught painting and became president of the local art association. Orrin White was a pupil. Brandriff painted landscapes, mostly of California but occasional works are known of other locales in the Southwest, and in 1929 he made a trip to France, and works from that voyage appear on the auction market. This little gem is clean/fresh and wall-ready.
