Additional Information George Herbert Walker Bush was an American diplomat, businessman, and politician who served two terms as Vice President under Ronald Reagan in the 1980s before becoming the 41st President of the United States of America, where he served one term following his election as the Republican nominee. Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, and attended Phillips Academy before serving in the United States Navy Reserve as a pilot during World War II before graduating from Yale. Following Yale, Bush relocated to West Texas, where he started a successful oil company. Bush was elected to the United States Congress in 1966 before being appointed as the ambassador to the United Nations by Richard Nixon. Bush ran for president in 1980 before Reagan won the Republican nomination and brought Bush into his campaign as vice president, where he would serve out two terms. Pictured here in his official presidential portrait, Bush displays his integrity and career in civil service, with political historians regarding him as an above average president who helped lead the nation during a period of transformation and evolution. Bush met his wife, Barbara, at a Christmas dance in Greenwich in 1941, and they became engaged in 1943 and married in 1945 when Bush was on leave from his military service. This presidential photograph depicts Bush at the height of his political career, one which his son George W Bush would follow in becoming the Governor of Texas before serving two terms as President following Republication nominations.
