The land located in Sherburne was purchased for the sum of thirty three pounds twelve shillings from Stephen Hussey, Josiah Barker, Silvanus Starbuck, Shubael Barnard and Zaccheus Macy. 1791: William Gardner and his son-in-law Coffine Whippey built a house on the land purchased in 1789 located in Sherburne, at what is now 64 Centre Street. They entered into a mutual agreement for their convenience that divided the house in half for the use of each man and his family. 1821: William Gardner sold his half of the house, as set down by the agreement of 1791, to Coffin Whippey for the sum of $450.00. The deed included provision for William Gardner and his wife Phebe to live in their half of the house until their deaths. ... 1950: Emma Francis Hayward gave the entire house, property, shop building, furniture and furnishings to the First Congregational Church of Nantucket.
