Description: Bettis Academy was established by former slave Rev. Alexander Bettis on January 1, 1882, in Edgefield County South Carolina, to provide spiritual and industrial training for African American youth. The school was unique in that it accepted farm raised produce as fees for board, which allowed many students whose parents were poor to attend the Academy. Bettis Academy was accredited as a junior college in 1933 and closed in 1952 with 14 major buildings on 350 acres. Today, the campus serves as a national monument and is lited on the National Register of Historic Places. Alexander Bettis (1836-1895) was an ex-slave who founded Bettis Academy, a coeducational institution that provided elementary, high school, and junior college training for blacks in Trenton, South Carolina. The academy was incorporated in 1889 and was located about 1.5 miles southeast of Trenton. Reverend Bettis was succeeded by A.W. Nicholson as president, who served for about fifty years. Reverend Bettis was born on a nearby Edgefield District plantation owned by a Widow Jones and worked as an overseer and sawmill manager during the Civil War.
