Description: A Federal issue for the .56 Spencer Carbine cartridge found near Todd’s Tavern, part of the Spotsylvania Campaign. The skirmish was fought between Custer’s Michigan Brigade and a unit of Virginia cavalry on the Brock Road. The brass cartridge and the round, which measures .52, were found separately. My father and I found this site in the early 1960’s along with the owner of the “Chancellorsville Outpost”, a Mr. Kellerman. The site was as described by the soldiers afterwards. Custer’s Michigan cavalry had dismounted with their line along the top of a ravine as the Confederate cavalry charged across the field. The relics in the ravine and down slope were as they fell, the relics in the field had been disturbed by the farmers plowing. This is one found in the field. The last picture has Mr. Kellerman’s original store tag from the 1960’s and some of the relics my father and I found. The box size is 2 1/4” x 3 1/4”. The relic comes in the white display box (with lid) with the description as shown. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
