Russian Imperial Silver Dessert Set by Famous Faberge Makers Monogram Russian Imperial gilded silver antique dessert set to include: spoon, fork and a knife, with unique design on patterned handles.Marked with the 84 silver standard & work masters: "AN"- Anders Nevalainen, worked for famous Carl Faberge, and "GN"-- Gabriel Niukkanen, Faberge Master, some second initial unclear. Rare set, limited edition.Don't miss an opportunity to own a set of Russian Imperial Antique by Faberge Silversmiths! Silverware set measures: Knife: 7 inches or 17,8 cm. Spoon: 6 inches or 14,9 cm. Fork: 6 inches or 15,2 cm. Weight set : 3,8 oz or 108 gr. Please note the different appearance of the pattern on the knives compared to the forks & spoons, because they were made in the past by two different Faberge masters. Quite possibly the pattern was adjusted to fit the narrow width of the knife handle or the knives were a subsequent addition to the set. Either way, they fit well with the fork & spoon & the beautiful quality of the original set is beyond reproach. Good condition. Please see photos as part of the description. From Wikipedia: Anders Juhaninpoika Nevalainen (1858 in Pielisjärvi, Finland – 1933, in Terijoki) was a Russian gold silversmith, Fabergé workmaster of Finnish origin. Biography: Anders Nevalainen was an apprentice in Finland and in St. Petersburg in 1874, a goldworker in 1875 (and registered as an employee of Fabergé), and a master goldsmith in 1885. As master first working in the jewelry atelier of August Holmström, he soon became head of workshop under exclusive contract with Fabergé. His workshop made silver- mounted frames in birchwood, palisander or lacquer, silver-and gold cigarette-cases, enameled silver-gilt cases with leather sleeves, several small silver-gilt objects. His initials A.N, mostly used with K.Fabergé mark without the double-headed eagle Imperial Warrant. Anders Nevalainen later opened his own shop while maintaining his contract with Fabergé. He specialized in embroidered cigarette cases, sliver frames, ceramics & woodwork. The Nevalainen family returned to Finland after the Russian Revolution in 1917. Anders Nevalainen died in Terijoki in 1933. Antti Nevalainen-workmaster marks AN & A.N – active 1885-1917Anders is the Swedish speaking version of the name, but Nevalainen was a purely Finnish speaking person. There are two official languages in Finland, Finnish and Swedish. The clergymen in the old days were almost all Swedish speakers and therefore, on their own initiative wrongly marked Swedish versions of names into church registers when they added confirmation dates, marriage dates, etc.Gabriel Nykänen – workmaster mark GN – active 1889-1917Niukkanen is an old misunderstanding which came about because Nykänen, when he as a young apprentice arrived in St. Petersburg, had to have his name transliterated into Russian. When the name was transliterated back to Latin script, it went wrong. Both Nykänen and Niukkanen are usual Finnish names, no one has noticed the error before now.
