Legend: Summer Lounge of a House in Cairo : All houses in Cairo, belonging to rich families, show similar layout. The entrance gate is guarded by a porter. There are two gates for entering the main court of the house. One is for men, the other for women. The women of Orient are not completely secluded, but they are separate from men. As with Greek women of antiquity, they are allowed to leave women's quarters, but men are forbidden to enter them. A typical house features two or three floors; the ground floor is comprised of a court, room for the visitors, a grand summer lounge, kitchen and other secondary rooms. The master of the house receives the guests on the first floor. The second and third floors are designated for women. The last floor usually has a room for banquets. The arrangement of every house is quite irregular, for example, individual rooms are rarely on the same level, to go from one to another, one almost always has to pass a few steps. The summer lounge is comprised of a central court covered by a cupola-shaped roof with an opening to provide daylight but to prevent direct sunlight. Directly under the cupola is a marble basin with one or two fountains. The fountain is at a lower level than the adjoining street level. Alongside the lounge, there are raised, square alcoves, equipped with sofas. The reconstruction of this house was based on the actual ruins of an ancient Egyptian house.
