Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Odell - 1831. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following biblical quotation and verse Micah Chap VI 8He hath shewed thee O man what is goodAnd what doth the Lord require of theeBut to do justly and to love mercyAnd to walk humbly with thy God~~~~~~~~~Thro every gentle sliding hour may truth and virtue be my guideNor soft temptation find a power to dray my steady soul aside The quotation has a crown and small example of border pattern to its right and is then underlined with a deep floral border whilst the verse has crowns, a floral motif and examples of border pattern to its right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif with a floral motif, fruit basket, heart and tree to either side and a flower basket below with a dog, diamond and cushion motif to the left and right of its topmost blooms. The basket itself has a diamond, flower basket and small star to both sides with Ann's name and the date of November 1831 in between. The whole piece is then surrounded by a strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, grubby to the upper section with a few small areas of damage to the field and visible fraying to the bottom edge. One is able to see through the damage that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also bleeding to some of the green stitch work. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century stained pine frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is also minor separation to both lower mitres and some slight movement to the side pieces of the frame but nothing to be concerned about. Measures 12 3/4" x 14 1/4" (sight size) and 14 3/4" x 16 1/4" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
