Description: This is an early Civil War era or older pewter & wood multi purpose syringe which was used for irrigating wounds, giving enemas, and even applying liquid "cures" for syphilis and venereal disease. The syringe is made of pewter and has its original wood handle and plunger shaft.....8 3/8"long....threaded collar can be unscrewed for cleaning....Excellent condition with no damage. Nice and clean with no corrosion. This is about the nicest early pewter syringe I've ever seen!...Syringes in the mid 1800s were often used by males or females who had venereal disease. Mercury was one of the most common "cures" for Vd in the 1800s which gave rise to the saying "An evening with Venus: A month with Mercury". Many prostitutes had gonorrhea who passed the disease on to men who had been away from home during the Civil War. Thousands of men contracted gonorrhea from prostitutes and sadly brought diseases home with them after the war was over in 1865. Of course there was no cure for venereal disease, so home treatments of mercury and various other awful and dangerous drugs were used with these syringes.....to no avail.Early syringes like this were also often used to irrigate or clean battle wounds during the Civil War. Also it could be used for veterinary purposes on horses and animals...
