Description: The Eagle of the Ninth remains Rosemary Sutcliff’s most famous book, although its sequel, The Lantern Bearers, won the Carnegie Medal in 1959. It is probably the most famous novel about Roman Britain ever written and one of the most influential historical novels of the 20th century. It has been adapted into BBC radio and TV series and in 2011 into a Hollywood movie entitled The Eagle. This book also has its own Wikipedia page. Printings from the early fifties are scarce. A book of real resonance for fans of historical fiction. There is a poignant double-meaning in the title for Latin speakers, which I suspect some readers miss: the name of the hero and of his father, the standard bearer of the Ninth Legion as depicted in the jacket image, is Aquila, which means eagle. The point is that the hero’s search for the lost eagle of the Ninth is really an expedition to resolve the mysterious fate of his dead father. CONDITION: Book is very good plus with its deep blue real cloth boards hardly faded, pages clean and intact with a firm binding. The dustjacket is almost now very good. It has a few chip repairs, especially to the head of its spine and a repair to a tear across the upper left corner of its rear panel (see photo of rear of the dustjacket). However, the jacket has not been price-clipped. Will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers. Dustjacket will be protected with a removal clear cellophane wrapper when delivered.
