Description: The Search for John Gissing starring Alan Rickman, Janeane Garofalo, Mike Binder, Frank Harper, Caroline Holdaway, Juliet Stevenson and Sonya Walger; written and directed by Mike Binder. The Story: Matthew Barnes is a young exec on the move up but he finds himself a pawn in corporate in-fighting when he's sent to London to oversee a merger. Beyond the merger, he is to replace John Gissing (Rickman). Gissing has already gotten wind of what's coming and makes sure that Matthew and his wife Linda have a miserable first few days. By the time Matthew figures out what's happening and starts a counter offensive, it may be too late to save himself. Comment: Clever British comedy-drama that's almost a throw-back to the 70's style of humor. The first half of this movie is laugh-out-loud funny with madcap misadventures and a bit of a mystery as well. Writer/director/star Mike Binder is quite likable as the everyman-underdog hero. He looks and acts so much like Ben Stiller than that they might have hired Stiller instead. Garofalo is her usual wise-cracking persona. Alan Rickman steals the show, proving that he can deliver comedy as well as drama. Comment on this DVD release: According to IMDB (and the label) this film has not been rated. It contains brief nudity and numerous adult situations, mostly presented as comedy. The factory sealed disc from Entertainment Studios is not advertised as Media-On-Demand, but the samples I checked were delivered on recorded DVD media. In addition to the film, the disc includes out-takes and deleted scenes. Per the label, the film has running time of 91 minutes, English audio, no subtitles, widescreen format. This disc is NTSC format designed to play on DVD players in North America. It will probably not play on PS/2 - PS/3 or similar game devices.
