Although this Duke Ellington CD has a title identical to a 1994 Blue Note reissue of his 1971 concert tour of England, the recordings within this release are previously unreleased studio rehearsals from Duke Ellington's well-known private tape stockpile. Unlike the concert recording, Ellington fans can hear all seven sections of the "Togo Brava Suite" as it was first conceived by its composer. Although crisp in parts, it is clear during most of the suite that the band is still finding their way through this relatively new work. Russell Procope's vibrato-filled clarinet and Harry Carney's sonorous baritone sax are highlights of "Tego," while "Soso" (mistitled "Woods" by some discographers) is an up-tempo blues cooker showcasing Harold Ashby and long time Ellington star Paul Gonsalves, who is regrettably off-mic somewhat during the beginning of his solo. Newcomer Norris Turney, the first Ellington band member to be featured on flute, is heard in three sections on the instrument as well as some potent alto sax solos. Ellington's peculiar taste in vocalists is reflected in the presence of Nell Brookshire and Tony Watkins, both of whom are heard on the rather poppish "There's a Place." One of the more unusual tracks is "Blues," an impromptu quartet that includes Ellington with bassist Joe Benjamin, drummer Rufus Jones, and organist Wild Bill Davis; there's also the sole existing recording of "Hick," a roughly hewn blues with a relatively rare solo by trombonist Malcom Taylor, among others.
