The painting was begun in 2010, during the time I lived in Tombstone, Arizona, after visiting Prescott's Whiskey Row district. Details were worked out with the help of Tombstone historian Ben Traywick. The project sat on the back burner, and was finally completed in 2022. Thank you to my husband Tom and the other Old West reenactors for posing as background elements in this image.The painting depicts legendary gunfighters Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp unwinding over a friendly game of pool in Prescott's Palace Saloon, 1879. Doc's woman, Big Nose Kate, stands watching the two from the shadowy staircase behind. Both men participated in the famed shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona (1881). Doc and Wyatt gambled and did business in both Tombstone and Prescott, and were known to frequent the saloons along Whiskey Row. Likenesses were recreated using authenticated photographs of the two men, not the Hollywood movie actors. History lovers will appreciate the historically correct details and faithful rendering of the present-day Palace. The oldest saloon in the state, the Palace began as the Cabinet Saloon in 1874, and continues to this day.
