They are Raven banners. Viking flags were not like our contemporary flags; rectangles or squares. They also did not denote countries as there was no Viking country. The banners represented local clans or chiefdoms. They sometimes depicted spiritual symbolism as well. These marked territory, were displayed over a chief's lodging or a community common house. They adorned the prows of ships and led warriors into battle. They were a symbol to rally around and instilled unity. These flags offered today have the raven as their logo. Ravens were a spirit animal recalling god Odin and his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. Ravens have an important place in Norse mythology. To the Vikings, the image of Odin seated on his throne with ravens upon his shoulders symbolized his power to see into the future. Additionally, as symbols of the battlefield, ravens represent Odin's wecoming to Valhalla, in which the warriors fallen in battle can enjoy an honorable and happy afterlife. These flags are simply made of card stock and each come with a 14" wooden dowel. Instructions are included. All you'll need are scissors and a glue stick. Borrow them from your kids' supplies.
