Description: You are buying The Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, a unique one-of-a-kind book set. It is the famous Oxford hardcover dictionary in two volumes that is known for providing extensive coverage of the English language, including over 150,000 entries and a comprehensive index for easy reference. First published by Oxford University Press in 1971, this copy is from the 28th printing from 1989. The dictionary is part of the Oxford series and is considered a specialized dictionary in the field of English language. But what makes this so unique is the Oxford shrunk four pages from the original massive dictionary and presented them on each page in these volumes. Four on one. This means, the font used is absolutely tiny, and difficult to read with the naked eye. To remedy that, the publisher includes a nice Bausch and Lomb magnifying glass in a special drawer (in the slip case) so you can actually read the dictionary! Size of each volume is approximately 12”x9 ½” x 2 ½”. Size of case (hhousing both books and magnifying glass drawer) is 14”x10”x6”. Condition: Books are near mint! Covers are super nice, bindings are tight, and pages are bright. No writing inside that I can see. Perhaps some light handling, but honestly very little evidence of that. Book corners are nice. The gold ‘embossed’ crest and titles on the spine are stunning. Shiny and nice. These are super nice copies. Hardly touched. The firm cardboard case shows a few signs of wear, but colors remain bold, and sides/corners are fully intact. The magnifying glass drawer sticks but I was able to coax it out without frustration and remove the glass for use. Drawer pull is original. Overall, really nice on the case as well. This book is not an ex-library book. I am not a book exchange company or Goodwill, where books are played out or pretty much ‘well fingered’ and obviously handled a lot. I mail items surrounded by cardboard, unlike some sellers that drop it in a thin plastic bag and call it good. I want it to arrive in the same condition you see in the photos.
