Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button for the 1982 Chicago Peace Walk. Dated April 10, 1982. Measures 2 1/4" inches. BACKGROUND: The Chicago Walk for Peace was a nuclear disarmament demonstration organized by progressive faculty and students at the University of Chicago. It attracted over 30,000 demonstrators who marched along Michigan Avenue in a 'peace walk' demanding the end of the nuclear arms race on the 40th anniversary of the birth of nuclear power. Chanting slogans and carrying signs, demonstrators marched in northbound lanes as mounted police blocked off traffic. Motorists blared their horns at marchers, including a large number of walking children and babies pushed in strollers. The walk ended at Stagg Field on the campus of UChicago, with Studs Terkel giving an impassioned speech on the need to save the human race from the horrors of nuclear annihilation. Terkel told the crowd "this is a day to guarantee survival -- survival of the human race. It is very appropriate for this rally to be held in Chicago because 40 years ago the atom was split here. The bang stops here. We believe that all men are created equal, not cremated equal".
