Description: Centaurea nigra is a perennial in the Asteraceae family. A native to Europe. Some familiar names are Black Knapweed, Hardheads, Lesser Knapweed, and Spanish Buttons. Considered a weed in places, but this flower provides lots of nectar for pollinators. It is rated in the top 5 for nectar producers. I would keep this one in a container just for the nectar. It grows to about 3 feet tall and can re-seed and spread out to forty feet or more. The leaves are lobed and hairy, around 10 inches long. The flowers are perched on an inflorescence with a few flower heads. The bright purple flowers are relatively small, around 1 inch in diameter, and bloom from July until September. Many bees, birds, and butterflies like to visit. It prefers to grow in full sun with minimal water needs. Zones 7-10 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
