Built 1/48 McDonnell F3H-3 Demon VF-14 Tophatters June 1961 US Navy

This is a nicely built McDonnell F3H-3M Demon fighter aircraft made from the Hobby Boss kit. This is a built plastic model airplane and is display ready as is. There has been nice attention paid to detail the aircraft, with details nicely completed in the cockpit section, weathering and very fine airbrushing work on the fuselage, wings and even the burner can (exhaust nozzle) at the tail of the aircraft depicting how the heat would temper the color of the exhaust. She would make a nice addition to your collection. There were a few problems with the decals, there were some that a piece or two came off- easy fix but want to get this off the bench as have had too much time into it. In the photos for the listing are pictures of the actual aircraft in service as well! Painted in the markings of aircraft serial number 145288 (5288) of the VF-14 “Tophatters,” this aircraft was stationed aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) June 21st, 1961. The real aircraft was scrapped at the conclusion of the Demon’s service in the US Navy. “The F3H Demon was McDonnell Aircraft Corporation's first swept wing aircraft, providing the basis for development of the F-4 Phantom II. It was an infamously troubled aircraft; engine problems plagued the first version of the airplane, resulting in eleven crashes and the deaths of four pilots between 1952 and 1955. Later versions of the aircraft were designed for all-weather operations and could carry the AIM-7 Sparrow missile, yet the Demon never shook its troubled reputation. Nevertheless, until 1964 the F3H-2 complemented daylight dogfighters such as the F8U Crusader and the F11F Tiger as a carrier all-weather, missile-armed interceptor. The Demon was withdrawn before it could serve in Vietnam where the F-4 Phantom II, itself conceived as an advanced development of the Demon, was a mainstay. Between 1956 and 1964, a total of 23 Navy fighter squadrons flew versions of the F3H Demon.“ Please refer to the pictures for further details as they describe the aircraft best (a picture is worth a thousand words!)
