Description: Original artifacts excavated on the Fredericksburg Battlefield, Virginia. At center is a spoon one part of a folding mess kit used by both sides. A Federal issue “Eagle” button and a flat button that would have been issued with a Confederate uniform are at top. The other artifacts, a knapsack hook, kepi buckle and brass rivets for leather accoutrements were also used by both sides. The lead bullets which have oxidized in the ground are a three ring Federal issue .58 for the Springfield rifle, a fired Confederate issue .58 Gardner round made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia and a .36 Colt revolver. The scene was reproduced from a photograph taken in 1863 by Andrew Russell after the assault on Maryes Height on May 3, 1863. This action was part of the Chancellorsville Campaign a few months after the attack there in December of 1862. Sedgwick moved his forces into Fredericksburg during dawn on May 3, uniting with Gibbon's division which had crossed the river just before dawn. He decided to launch an attack on the Confederate center on the heights, which was manned by Barksdale's brigade, with John Newton's division; this attack was defeated. Colonel Thomas M. Griffin of the 18th Mississippi Infantry granted the Union forces a truce in order to gather in their wounded. During this truce, the Union commanders noticed that the flank of Barksdale's left regiment was unprotected. Sedgwick launched another attack against this flank and Barksdale's front using elements from all three VI Corps divisions, which pushed the Confederate forces off the ridge, capturing some artillery. The first men to mount the stone wall were from the 5th Wisconsin and the 6th Maine Infantry regiments. Barksdale retreated to Lee's Hill, where he attempted to make another stand but was again forced to retreat southward. The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don’t scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
