He was the first athlete to transcend both race and culture. Clemente grew up in rural Puerto Rico working fields of sugar cane where his family also worked. In high school in Carolina, Puerto Rico he excelled at track and field running and javelin throw. Even though he was talented enough in track and field to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympics his true love was baseball. After high school, Clemente played in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League LBPPR with the Cangrejeros de Santurce ("Crabbers") from 1952 through 1954. He was on the bench the 1st year and played as the leadoff hitter the 2nd season with a .288 avg. Clemente signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers February 19th 1954. After playing 87 games with the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Montreal Royals Clemente was aquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Rule 5 Draft which is a draft held in November/December each year that exists to guard against MLB teams stockpiling too many good players in the Minors that would otherwise be used by other MLB teams in the Majors. Roberto began playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in April 1955, but struggled a bit early on. His play was affected by his lower back issues stemming from a car accident in Puerto Rico where a speeding drunk driver hit his car. He hit .255 his rookie season. A highlight from his 2nd season in 1956 was an inside the park grand slam which lifted his team from 3 down to a one run victory. This still is the only walk off inside the park grand slam ever in MLB history (since 1900). In the off season Clemente often played with several Puerto Rican teams. In the 1958 off season Roberto joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve and served a 6-month active duty in Paris Island, Camp Lejune, and Washington D.C. Clemente was a private first class in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1964. Clemente began to excel with the Pirates in 1960 eventually leading to a 1960 World Series Championship over the New York Yankees. Clemente achieved many great things on the baseball field including: -15x All-Star (1960-1967 1969-1972) -2x World Series Champion (1960, 1971) -NL MVP (1966) -World Series MVP (1971) -12x Golden Glove Award (1961-1972) -4x NL Batting Champion (1961, 1964, 1965, 1967) -Batted over .300 13 seasons -Batted over .350 3 seasons Career Stats .317 Batting Average 3000 Hits 240 Home Runs 1305 RBIs Clemente dedicated much of his off seasons to charitable work. In 1972, after Managua, Nicaragua was decimated by a deadly earthquake, Roberto was called upon to offer his support. After he organized 3 airplane loads of earthquake relief supplies he learned the supplies were being diverted by corrupt Nicaraguan government officials. Therefore, on New Year’s Eve Clemente chartered a cargo plane and had it filled over capacity with supplies. His plan was to accompany the cargo plane to ensure the supplies would be delivered where they were supposed to be delivered. Unfortunately, the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Puerto Rico shortly after takeoff on December 31st 1972 due to engine failure. The bodies of Clemente and 3 other people on the plane were never recovered from the wreckage (only the pilot’s dead body was found). Roberto Clemente is revered the world over as being a great baseball player and also as a humanitarian who died trying to help other less fortunate people. ***fun fact Roberto Clemente chose the number 21 because there are 21 letters in his full name: Roberto Clemente Walker***
