Description: Authentic Hudson Bay Co. Bronze Effigy Trade Pipe. Height 2 inch; Width 4.25 inch; Depth 0.75 inch. Circa 1806. The inscriptions and designs on both sides of the pipe are noted as described. There are 2 hallmarks, a man sitting in profile with what appears to be a spinning wheel and an E with a half moon. The spaced holes are seen above the scalloped edge of the pipe. The pipe is shaped as a bird; the curved end is the head and there is an open round hole for the eye. The holes most probably had feathers and/or leather fringe. The pipe stem with the hole is seen. The pipe has a cylindrical bowl on the top area which has zigzags and small dots as a design. The pipe is bronze and does indeed date circa 1806. The bird is a peyote bird and is based on the old catlinite pipes originally made by the tribes of the Plains Indians which would be the Dakota tribe of North and South Dakota. The pipe is referred to as an effigy pipe. The Hudson Bay Company was founded in 1670 and is still in business. It is a Canadian retail business group; its U.S. headquarters are in New York. The designs on the pipe are commonly found on Native American objects of the period and were derived from Euro-American vessels. The Hudson Bay Company is known for their blankets, but earlier, made trade pipes, depicting Native American tribes, medals, armbands, tomahawks, and tobacco boxes, all in bronze and in silver.
