Archangel Michael has been revered since the time of the Kyiv Rus State – he was a symbol of the heavenly protection of the power of Kyiv Rus princes. Later on, this reverence was manifested not only in toponyms – in the names of church buildings, but also in heraldry – on the coats of arms of Kyiv, the Voivodeship of Kyiv, and the Province of Kyiv.
