Notes: Erythrai (or Erythrae) was an ancient Ionian city which stood on a peninsula opposite the island of Chios. The city's earliest coins are thought to be some uninscribed electrum pieces of the seventh century B.C. and later, the obverse type of which is the star-like flower or rosette, which recurs at a later period on the inscribed silver coins. The largest denomination is a half stater of 109 grs. Electrum hectae are also attributed to Erythrae, obv. Archaic head of Herakles in lion-skin. In the Fourth century B.C. and later the city minted silver coins on the Rhodian Standard with Head of young Herakles in lion-skin and ethnic ΕΡΥ along with a Club and bow in case; in field sometimes a small owl and magistrates’ names.
