Description: Years ago I used to buy containers of furniture in the north of England and one of the things I found and loved to buy were small chests made exactly like the real thing only in miniature. Some might call them doll's chests here, but they were usually referred to as 'Apprentice' pieces. The tradition was that when the master felt his apprentice might be ready to work without his constant supervision or actually build a piece for the customer on his own...he was tested by crafting the miniature piece as proof. In fact, getting the proportions correct in miniature can be harder that making the real thing, and you could really see who passed and who...had to go back and try again. This one is American, and has the basic lines and style of the late 19th century "cottage" chests, which were often painted pine, but sometimes walnut. The hardware shows the influence of the colonial revival movement in the 1915-30's era, so it might have been made a bit later. It definitely has the proportions correct and is just a lovely little piece to keep things in. There are no repairs, and it measures 16" wide x 16" tall x 10" deep
