Description: These beautiful glass trade beads c1950 are from Ethiopia. Red "vaseline" beads are initially Czechoslovakian-made but traveled to the southern Oromo region of Ethiopia over the years. These hand-made beads have a beautiful bi-cone shape and come in several colors. Red "vaseline" beads used to be easy to come by but are becoming increasingly hard to find. Each glass bead is approximately 11mm x 16mm and in excellent antique condition. You will receive one 11.5" strand with 27 beads. The beads are called vaseline glass, but actual vaseline glass beads are yellow or yellow-green beads that turn bright florescent green under a blacklight since they are made with radioactive uranium, causing them to glow. Red beads do not glow and do not have uranium. The name "Vaseline glass" also refers to the greasy looking luster that these beads often exhibit.
