Description: This large washing pitcher was designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich for Villeroy & Boch Mettlach around 1900. Decorated with appliqués of red flowers and vines, the top is rimmed with blue and white stripes and the rim is edged in gold. In 1897 Joseph Maria Olbrich was one of the founders of Vienna Secessionist movement, along with Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser. Born in Austria and trained as an architect, he is best known as the designer of the Secession Hall in Vienna. In the early 1900s, he began working in the applied arts and design, including pottery. He died in 1908. Marked with a green printed Villeroy & Boch mark, along with "Olbrich, Glatt" and the model number 1497. There is also an impressed mark "DG 64". In very good antique condition - there is wear to the gold rim, two small chips in the glaze on the inside, and some evidence of its use perhaps as a flower vase (dirt marks inside). There is some light crazing in one area. No visible chips on the exterior or cracks.
