Description: Antique Thomas Rowlandson Hand-Colored Engraving Description and Item Information Up for sale is this beautiful, old hand-colored engraving. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This antique print depicts the famous character, Dr. Syntax, as he meets two ladies. It is a very nice example of this particular print. This detailed engraving has wonderful, saturated colors, which were applied by hand. The print is nicely presented (matted and framed, under glass) in a dark, wooden frame. The mat has colored borders which match the colors in the print. The sight area measures approximately 5 1/2 inches by 8 5/8 inches. The exterior frame measurements are about 12 5/8 inches by 15 1/2 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1 pound 15.9 ounces. It would make a great addition to a collection of antique prints. Identification The piece is titled, "Introduction to Courtship." At the lower left, the following is printed, "Drawn by Rowlandson." Verso, there is a frame shop label from the Atherton Gallery which indicates that the framing was done in May 1980. Also verso, there is a label from Lyons Ltd. Antique Prints, which identifies this print as a hand-colored engraving from Thomas Rowlandson's Dr. Syntax series. This label misstates the age of the print as being from the late 18th century; it actually is circa early 19th century. The Dr. Syntax series was written by William Combes and illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). There were three volumes, which were written between 1812 and 1821. This print illustrates a scene from the Third Tour of Dr. Syntax, Dr. Syntax In Search of a Wife. Rowlandson was a famous English artist, known for caricature. This print is from the fine estate of a collector of quality artworks on paper. Condition This print looks very good, as shown. The mat and frame also look very good; the frame has very light wear. In my opinion, this piece is ready to hang and enjoy. I have not examined the artwork outside of the frame, since it was already nicely framed when I acquired it.
