Description: This piece measures 4.38 inches tall and it depicts a Fu (Foo) Dog or Shishi Lion and they are often referred to as Koma-Inu in Japan. It is a mythical lion and in China the lion is the master of all felines, the defender of law, and the protector of sacred buildings and it is a symbol of strength and power to repel evil spirits and often regard as a talisman and good luck charm. The marking at the bottom of the piece reads "Oribe." Oribe is Japanese ceramic ware and named after the 16th century tea master and warrior, Furuta Oribe. The name is associated to a wide range of ceramics though it usually has a characteristic dark green copper glaze like this piece. The gleaming thick light brown color glaze gives a rustic feel yet emphasizes the fierce expression of the Fu Dog in rich detail ensuring it as a fine talismanic charm. The condition of this piece is very good and its age is from the 1940's.
