Description: This is a rare, beautiful, light apple green Mason’s Patent Nov. 30th, 1858 quart canning jar topped with a milk glass-lined zinc lid. No markings on the bottom of the jar. This jar was made sometime in 1860-1900. An interesting note about the sloping shoulder design: “The Mason's design worked because the sharp, almost perpendicular to the screw-thread finish shoulder ledge functioned as the sealing surface with the addition of a rubber gasket placed between the shoulder and the bottom of the cap. The ledge shows clearly below the cap in the picture to the right below, although no rubber gasket is in place.” (Source: Society for Historical Archaelogy) See a close-up photo of the rim. It is a mouth-blown jar with a smoother ground rim/lip. These jars were usually blown in post-bottom molds, showing variable amounts of crudeness depending on age, manufacturer, and other factors (Source: The Society for Historical Archaeology). This unique canning jar is in excellent condition, with just a couple chiggers on the screw threads. Please see the photos. Otherwise, there are no chips, dings, or cracks. It exhibits the lovely waviness and little bubbles expected with glass jars of this era. You will love adding this bright, beautiful green apple jar to your historical canning collection!
