History: This product is the work of Micheal Emanuel's sons Leon and Frederick, as the hallmarks date to Birmingham in 1912. Michael Emanuel was born in London at around 1805. By the time he was an adult, he worked as an apprentice for jewelers. His first mark was registered at 1 Bevis Marks in 1825, within the former property of Elliott & Edmond, Plumbers and Glaziers. By 1831, he was made free from apprenticeship within the Spectaclemakers Company as a jeweler. Between 1831 and ~1839, Micheal worked with his brother Morris as a partner under the Emanuel Brothers. By 1839, Morris retired and his other brother Henry joined. By 1839, the company was named Emanuel Brothers and / or Emanuel Company. Micheal was listed in the Electoral Registers at 5 Hanover Square in 1840, which is verified in the UK Census's of 1841 and 1851. Under the UK Census, Micheal was listed as a silversmith, goldsmith, and a jeweler. The Emanuel Brothers were prestigious jewelers to the Queen Victoria in 1839, while also being considered wholesale jewelers. From 1840 to 1843, their company also sold various works to the royal family. In general, the bank charter act of 1844 along with the onset of the panic of 1847 likely played a role in the brothers eventual bankruptcy. Businsess could have also slowed down following the economic bust of the railroad boom. Though the brothers were sued for bankruptcy in 1846, Micheal was exonerated by the court. Micheal lived at the address of 1 Wimpole Street in 1861, describing himself as a gentleman. The UK census of 1871 however lists him as a retired diamond merchant residing at 23 Wimpole Street. His death is recorded in 1872 with an estate valued for probate purposes at around 2000 pounds. According to silvermakersmark.co.uk, Micheal died in 1911, where his business was continued by his sons Leon and Frederick. Two marks were prevalent, one with (M.E), and another with just the letters (ME) surrounded by a circle relief. The exact date of his death is not known to me as my ancestory.com trial ended :( Uniqueness: With the feature of a unique enamel dog scene, this match box is great for those who appreciate the icons. This product is also the work of the company which Micheal Emanuel formed. Important: Offering a 30-day return period, and am open to negotiations on matters of price.
