Description: This is a Ambrotypes Photo of a young Man. On the back it reads, Wyman & Co. 12 1/2cents. 335 Washington St. Corner of West Street, Boston . Then someone wrote under that 1853. It was handed down through My sister-in-laws family and she doesn't know who it is nor does she have an interest in it. I find it quite interesting as it actually has the company on the back that made it. Ambrotypes, which resembled but cost less than daguerreotypes were made from 1854-1880's. This one had 1853 on it. They were made using the Collodion wet Plate process that was also used to make negatives. The name" ambrotos, was devised by Philadelphia daugerreotypist Marcus A. Root in 1855, from Greek ambrotos, meaning imperishable.
