Description: This is a 19 century French Fish sewing etui with partial tools Featuring a thimble and matching fish needle case, circa 1870 The Darling antique Fish sewing ETUI case measures 4 inches long and 1.5 inches high. It is silver plated, hinged at the bottom and the front has a ring to attach to a ribbon or chatelaine. It opens to display only two remaining of the tools that would’ve been originally included. One is a Fish needle case and the other a thimble.. Unfortunately, the original fitted purple royal blue velvet interior must have been wet at one time and is peeling from the interior. Oh, if only this Fish could talk. The thimble is 15 mm in diameter at the opening. It is not perfectly round but has no holes or repairs or other damage. The needle case is 1 5/8 “ inches long, and also in the shape of a fish, be featuring scales, fins, eyes, gills and an open mouth. Each scale has been hand carved and it’s really lovely piece to see. It looks like it might be silver, but it is not marked so bid accordingly. The outside of the large fish case is in excellent condition with the silver plating intact. The entire piece has a soft glow and the original patina . The hinge is strong and original. Such a type of Fish is shown on page 132 of Norlla Taunton‘s book “antique needlework tools and embroidery” This set is not often found (at the very least scarce and even probably rare ) and while I wish it was perfect, if you don’t have it in your collection, it still displays well and is in as found condition.
