Description: This piece was originally made as a cover for a bassinet or baby cradle, in a time when bugs and mosquitos were a really big issue. Many windows didn't have screens, and there wasn't anything like air conditioning. Most houses were cooled by open windows, and possibly electric fans. For babies, this was a hazard, as the bugs could munch away, and no one the wiser until they picked up the baby and discovered the depredation. In order to avoid this, bassinets and cradles were often covered. Of course, the cover had to be netting, to avoid smothering the baby, and translucent, so you could see the baby, and yet heavy enough to stay in place. I originally purchased this piece for the fabric. This type of heavy netting isn't around anymore, but in the Victorian era, was used for all kinds of crafts - especially for vintage Christmas decorations. However, it was in such great condition, that I couldn't bring myself to cut it up. It's a nice size - 34" x 62", so it can be used for dolls, babies, or crafts!
