Antique 1854 James C Hook Market Morning O/B Landscape Painting

Description & Condition: James Clark Hook United Kingdom artist (1819-1907)Up for sale is this antique 1854 oil on wood panel landscape painting titled "Market Morning". It depicts a family heading to the market to sell goods. There is a girl on horseback looking back at her mother in front of the cottage and her brothers and sisters are walking along side her. There are cows in the field in upper left and a sheep behind the trees lower right. It measures 36" by 25" and is large. The gilt wood frame measures 42" by 32". It is signed on a paper label on the reverse and there is also an exhibition label from Bond Street galleries Picadilly in 1855 #9. This is a masterpiece work by Hook! Here is some info on the artist:James Clarke Hook was a British artist born in London. He trained at the Royal Academy and continued his studies in Italy, Paris, and Switzerland. Hook's work often explored the relationship between the navy and British identity in the mid-19th century. He was particularly interested in coastal subjects and the effect of the sea on domestic life. One of his notable works is "The Ship Boy's Letter," which depicts a mother reading a letter from her son who is at sea, while the father looks on with a distant expression. Hook's attention to detail is evident in the legible envelope addressed to "William Dibble." Children often went to sea in their pre-teen years, leaving their families behind, as was the case with the ship boy in the painting Please view all the photos and if you have any questions please ask.
