Description: This is a life-sized reproduction of an extremely rare 1520-1530 Renaissance engraving by Netherlandish artist Allaert Claesz. in the collection of the British Museum: "Allegory with two naked men in a shell boat, one clutching an hour-glass; the upright figure clasping the sail."Allaert Claesz. derived his image from a slightly earlier work by Agostino Veneziano. The British Museum created its facsimile on laid Van Gelder to publish in 1892 but mis-attributed the work to Giorgio Ghisi, hence the misleading text at the bottom of the image. I don’t know how this facsimile was created, you can feel the ink up on the surface, yet I don’t see a platemark. The printing and paper are in remarkable condition after 132 years.Image: 11.25 x 8.75 inches; sheet: 14.7 x 11.2 inches.Safely shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer.Thank you for looking at my lot. I hope you’ll consider checking out my other listings, and enjoy your day!
