The play opened at Henry Miller’s Theatre on December 23, 1942 and closed on January 2, 1943 after only 14 performances. In the cast were Alec Guinness and Nancy Kelly. The Setting: London; Residents' lounge of Falcon Hotel, Milchester, Lincs The Plot: Set in a hotel near an RAF Bomber Command airbase during the Second World War, the story involves a love triangle between a pilot (Guinness), his actress wife (Kelly) and a famous film star (Arthur Margetson). The title of the play refers to the lamps outlining runways, which were known as a flare path. ALEC GUINNESS (1914–2000) was an English stage and film actor. He appeared at London’s New Theatre in John Gielgud's successful production of Hamlet in 1936 at the age of 22. At the Old Vic, Guinness worked with many actors and actresses who would become his friends and frequent co-stars in the future, including Gielgud, and Ralph Richardson. Guinness won a Tony Award for his Broadway performance as Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in Dylan. In all, between April 1934 and May 1989, he played 77 parts in the theatre. Guinness's role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars film trilogy, brought him worldwide recognition to a new generation, as well as Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. NANCY KELLY (1921-1995) was an American actress in film, theater and television. Nancy Kelly was a leading lady in 27 movies in the 1930s and '40s. Kelly was subsequently a two-time winner of the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in Chicago theatrical productions as well as a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play winner for her performance in The Bad Seed, which she followed up by starring in the 1956 film version, receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
