Full title: A Collection of Fac-Similes of Scarce and Curious Prints by the Early Masters of the Italian, German, and Flemish Schools; Illustrative of the History of Engraving, from the Invention of the Art, by Maso Finiguerra, in the Middle of the Fifteenth Century, to the End of the Century Following: with an Explanatory Catalogue of the Plates. Quarterbound in contemporary vellum spine and corners, with the gilt title to spine in a leather panel, also gilt-ornamented. Marbled paper over boards. Plain white endpapers. Collation - Folio: [a]2-d2. Pagination: [i-iv], v-xv, [xvi]. Then: 58 leaves/116 pp. to which are tipped in the facsimiles. Catalog descriptions number 100 (though some descriptions cover more than a single tipped in illus, the total number might be interpreted as high as 106), but this is not the more commonly seen edition of 129 fac-similes. Condition notes: a good plus to very good copy, worn but sound, with occasional heavy foxing. Collated and confirmed complete. Binding tight and sound. Slightly cocked; moderate wear to boards, corners heavily bumped. Interior shows bookplate of noted bibliophile and collector Hermann Marx to front pastedown, light pencil notes to ffep. Pages variably tanned and foxed, mostly light but occasionally heavy, mainly to sheets rather than engravings, with half-dozen engravings foxed. Plate 95 (Jerome Hopfer, 'The portrait of Charles V.') is loose on its page, else tipped in facsimiles remain attached to their pages. We personally inspect every item we offer for sale.
