Q Ship vs U-Boat: 1914-18 (Duel) Paperback 80 pages Osprey (2014) by David Greentree Q ships came in all shapes and sizes - coastal steamer, trawler, barque, yacht or schooner - but all had to look harmless in order to lure their opponents to the surface and encourage them to attack. Armaments differed according to ship size; steamers commonly had 4in guns mounted amidships and in the bow, trawlers 3-pdrs and sailing ships 12-pdrs. Those who served on Q ships had to accept that their U-boat opponents would be able to strike first. Q ship captains kept ready a ?panic crew', which was trained to act out an elaborate evacuation to convince the U-boat commander that the ship was being abandoned by its crew. The Q ship captain would remain behind with a handful of other crewmen manning the guns, which remained hidden until the most opportune time to unmask and engage the U-boat. The Q ship concept had emerged early in the war when no other method seemed likely to counter the U-boat threat, and flourished until new technologies and tactics were developed, tested and implemented. U-Boat Killer Fighting the U-Boats in the Battle of the Atlantic by Captain Donald MacIntyre Cassell Military Classics paperback, 192 pages Reprint edition (2000) A classic of naval warfare! Macintyre was England's top U-boat destroyer during World War II, with seven kills and several captures to his credit becoming the Royal Navy's ace U-Boat Killer. For his exploits he was awarded three DSOs and a DSC. Here he offers his firsthand account of safeguarding convoys in the North Atlantic from roaming German subs. From Submarine Bells to Sonar: Submarine Signal Company 1901 ? 1946 John Merrill Paperback. 71 pages, (2003) The book surveys some of the history of underwater sound during the 20th century. Started in 1901, the work of the Submarine Signal Company of Boston is highlighted. The Company played a significant role with its underwater bells and many contributions using sound in the sea and the path to leading to modern sonar. Later in the century, the Company became part of Raytheon. John Merrill, Sr., passed away on September 13, 2010, at the age of 93. His books provide a testament to his scholarship and dedication to enhancing knowledge of some of the subjects he committed his life to advancing: submarines, technology, and their history from the perspective of first-hand experience. Subchaser in the South Pacific A Saga of the USS SC-761 During World War II by J. Henry, Jr. Doscher Hardcover: 110 pages Publisher: Eakin Pr; 1st edition (April 1994) The SC class ships were the smallest warships in the US Navy. And they were tasked with some of the most dangerous missions in the war, from convoy escort duty to the deployment, re-supply, and rescuing of coast watchers in islands deep behind Japanese line. Henry Doscher was commissioned an ensign in the navy in 1942 and assigned as executive officer aboard th USS SC-761 in January 1943. Soon after arriving in the Solomon Islands, he became the commanding officer of the sub-chaser and led it through the tough campaigns in the southwest Pacific. 1st edition also includes (2) letters between Navy friends who served at the same time as the author. The one served on another sister ship in the same area. One letter is dated 1949, and the other came out after the book was printed.
