Corn Germination Guide If starting indoors, select the soil and container in which to start your seeds. For soil, use a seed starting mix for the best results. You may also use a soil-less potting mix, which is cheaper and widely available at most garden centers. For the container, use cell packs or a small pot three to four inches tall to start your seeds. Fill your cell packs or pots with potting mix to within 1 inch of the top. Place a single seed on top of the soil near the center of the container, one seed per cell or pot. Cover the seeds with about 1 inch layer of potting mix. Gently press the soil down with your fingers to ensure good contact between the seed and soil. Cover cell trays or pots with plastic or a seeding dome to increase humidity and raise the temperature of the soil. Corn will germinate quickest if soil temperatures are between 65°F to 85°F, so consider using a heating mat to provide the seeds warmth and speed up the germination process. Place your trays or pots in a sunny location that gets between 14 to 18 hours of sunlight per day, or beneath a grow light. Sprinkle or mist water on the seeds whenever the top of layer of soil appears dry, but be careful not to overwater! Soggy soil may cause the seeds to rot. Remove the plastic or seed dome from the the pot/trays once the seedlings have germinated. Once the seedlings reach about 3 to 4 inches in height you may transplant them to your garden. If direct sowing, choose and prepare a planting site. The area where you plant the corn should have soil that drains well yet remains consistently moist. As corn can be rather picky, consider working aged manure or compost into the soil in the fall prior to planting and allow it to remain in place over the winter. If this isn't possible, simply mix in the manure or compost prior to planting. Prepare the seeds. Corn can take a while to germinate, so to help speed up the germination time you can wrap the seeds in a moist paper towel and store them in a plastic zip-lock bag for 24 hours prior to sowing. Direct sow seeds about 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart in rows 30 to 36 inches apart. For sufficient pollination (which is done by the wind rather than bees!), consider planting the corn in blocks at least four rows deep. Water well at planting, and consider applying a 10-10-10 fertilizer. The fertilizer will help the corn grown rapidly, but you may skip this step if you think your soil already contains the appropriate levels of nutrients. Continue watering frequently during germination. If soil temperatures are 60°F or higher, the corn should emerge within 10 to 12 days. Soil temperatures below 55°F will slow germination, and the seeds may take up to 3 weeks to emerge.
