Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini (1858-1924) was an Italian composer known primarily for operas such as La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. Regarded as the greatest and most successful proponent of Italian opera after Verdi, he was descended from a long line of composers, stemming from the late-Baroque era. The most obvious feature of his music is its lyrical simplicity. Virtually anyone can hum a familiar Puccini tune – whether it is the tender melody of O mio babbino caro from his Gianni Schicchi or the climactic high notes of Nessun dorma from the opera Turandot. Catchy tunes are sprinkled throughout Puccini's music. The obverse features a portrait of Giacomo Puccini created at the beginning of the twentieth century by Luigi De' Servi, on display at the Puccini Museum in Lucca, birthplace of the Italian composer. The reverse shows the face of Turandot, the protagonist of Puccini's opera of the same name, taken from a 1926 cover by Leopoldo Metlicovitz, a master of the Italian art of poster design. Delivered in a luxury case, including a certificate of authenticity.
