You are bidding on about 20 CHRISTMAS ROSE SEEDS - Helleborus of various colors .Often known as hellebores , Lenten rose , these elegant perennials bloom during the Lenten season in late winter and early spring, hence their name. They are particularly valued by gardeners for their winter and early spring flowering period; the plants are surprisingly frost-resistant and many are evergreen. Features large, cup-shaped, rose-like, usually nodding flowers (3-4" diameter) with center crowns of conspicuously contrasting yellow stamens. Flowers usually appear in clusters of 1-4 on thick stems rising above the foliage. Flower color is extremely variable, ranging from white to pink to light rose-purple, frequently with interior spotting. These exhibit a strong resistance to deer, drought, and disease. With many varieties being hardy across four zones as well, this versatile perennial can even grace the gardens of the most northern of planters. The dried root is used, it contains the alkaloids nervine, pseudo-nervine and veratridine. It is best to harvest the root in the autumn. The plant is useful for reducing blood pressure in various conditions of hypertension. Other uses of : A decoction of the roots is used as a parasiticide against body lice, fleas etc. This use is somewhat dangerous, see the notes above on toxicity. Plants are suitable for ground cover when spaced about 45cm apart each way. Known hazards of : All parts of the plant are poisonous, this poison can possibly be absorbed through the skin.
