EMIGRE: 95 Year in the Life of a Russian CountA Memoir by Paul GrabbeSelf-published: 2014- Like New Good ConditionFROM A SMOKE-FREE HOME 1. FAMILY ALBUM -- This is a hardback book (no dust jacket) that measures 8.25" x 8.75" and has 237 pages. Here's a little info that I found with a little web surfing--MacDowell.org.: "Paul Chavchavadze (1899-1971) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and was a descendant of Georgian princes and the son of Alexander Chavchavadze, who was shot by the Bolsheviks in the early 1930s. Chavchavadze left Russia in 1918, going first to Romania and then to England, where he married Princess Nina of Russia in 1922. He came to the United States in 1927 and worked for 12 years with the Cunard Line, and then became a citizen and served as a field director with the Red Cross in World War II. Chavchavadze is well known for translating Only One Year by Joseph Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva, about the adventure that brought her to America. He also authored novels of his own, including Family Album, a volume of reminiscences. Condition: The author has signed and personalized this book (see pix #4). Because of the absence of the dust jacket I consider the book to be only in good condition. However, you will find no other writing, no rips and no folds on any of the pages, and none are loose or missing. The cover shows some were and grime to the corners and edges. All in all I think the book is in quite good condition for its age but take a look at the pix and judge for yourself. 2. EMIGRE -- This is an oversized softbound book that measures 9" x 6" and has 277 pages. Advance praise for Emigre wrote the following: "Paul Grabbe's odyssey...is a remarkable testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome one of the most wrenching of life's challenges, the abrupt loss of one's world. Ripped as a teenager from the glitter and privilege of a Russian aristocrat, miraculously escaping the Bolsheviks with his family, he battles to make a new life in a new world, waiting on tables, shoveling ore in a gold mine, and enduring hunger until he achieves security and makes peace with his fate. It is a gripping tale wonderfully told, with a rich cast of surprising characters and a series of enthralling adventures." Condition: I bought this book new. It continues to be free of rips, writing, stains, folds and spine creases. It is Like New. I'm slowly starting to part with some of my history/biography (mostly royalty) of England, Russia and some European countries from the period 2nd half of the 19th century thru the Russian Revolution. I got more taken with the period, than with the book I thought I would write. Now that I am in down-sizing mode, a lot of these books must go. So, if this period (and it does cover a lot of ground) is of interest to you, please check back with me in the weeks (and probably months) to come. Many of the books that I bought were used and not expensive, so I'll be bundling a lot of them in order not to be at this forever. Shipping will be via USPS Media Mail.
