Parrish painted the originals for this book in full color, but JOhn Lane, uanbale to preoduce their proper colors, decided to use a new black and white photogravure technique which proved far more successfull than the half-tone reproductions used two years earlier for the Parrish illustrated edition of The Golden Age. [WITH:] 2: The Golden Age by Kenneth Grahame Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish London and New York: John Lane, The Bodley Head 1904 Octavos, viii, 252, [3] pages, publisher's original olve cloth covered boards with pictorial decoration stamped in green, white, orange, and black and white. Top edge gilt. Pictorail endpapers. Illustrated with 19 photogravure plates. A removable clear mylar jacket has been added. Very minimal wear, else in near fine condition. First Photogravure Issue of the first Parrish-illustrated edition. Although these illustrations were first published in 1900, they were reproduced in half-tones, and thus lost much of the artwork's detail. Two years later, when Parrish's illustrations for the companion volume of Dream Days were finished, the publisher, John Lane, decided to try the then experimental technique of photogravure reproduction. So very successful was this reproduction that in 1904, four years after the illustrated had been first published, Lane decided to re-gather the original illustrations for The Golden Age and issue a new edition, this time using the new technique. For this reason, most collectors consider this the preferable edition of the Parrish-illustrated Golden Age.
