Description: Two Captains, One Ship - and No Crew! By Capt. Lucile de Tar Colyer 1966 Aquarian Age Press West Palm Beach, Fl. Softcover, 64 pages This is a story of a determination that brooked no opposition. A courage so great that no room was left for fear, and a driving energy that leveled all obstacles in its path. When two persons, a mother and her son, accept the challenge and defy the threat of the raging Mississippi by launching their brand new one-hundred-ton cruise ship into the midst of the worst flood conditions within the memory of man, then history is certain to be written. The following pages contain a portion of that history, yet no volume could fully describe all the obstacles that were met and surmounted, the hazards which were faced and overcome, and the many discomforts that were cheerfully endured. The entire operation, however, was one of calculated risk rather than a foolhardy adventure. The ship had to be taken through the Mississippi before the flood gates closed and imprisoned it, perhaps for the remainder of the winter. Contracts for the operation of the ship had to be fulfilled on schedule, and the only possible way to get the ship to its base of operations in West Palm Beach, Florida, was to go down the rampaging river, out into the stormy Gulf.... The Sage Old River Pilots shook their heads knowingly and declared that the attempt could never succeed. No pilot, however experienced, could possibly take a boat that size successfully through the several thousands of miles or river, filled almost bank to bank with debris of houses, barns, trees, parts of bridges and drifting or sunken boats and barges. It was pointed out that the vicious cross currents which develop at many points in the flooding river are impossible to anticipate and pose a constant threat of sudden disaster. Much of the piloting would have to be done by blind calculation or pure guesswork. How this impossible feat was successfully accomplished can best be told by the principals in the drama of faith, determination and endless endurance. Illustrated with photographs throughout, and a map. Some cover stain spots but nearly very good conditi9on over all. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
