A very rare collectible envelope stamped in the post office in Jerusalem on January 5th 1964. The postal stamp Jonas the prophet from the Biblical scene "Et il Y Eut Grande Tempete Sur La Mer..." Jonas 1,4 On January 5, 1964, Pope Paul VI visited Israel. He began his visit to the Kingdom of Jordan. During his visit, he visited the Old City of Jerusalem (then under Jordanian rule) and passed on foot the 14 stops on Via Dolorosa - the Way of the Passion of Christ. He was forced to pass through many of the stations abruptly, without delay for prayer, due to the commotion surrounding him, with Jordanian police and Arab Legion soldiers protecting him and rescuing him from the narrow crowd. The pope arrived in Israel for a brief 11-hour visit. He arrived at 9:30 a.m. in a convoy of cars, crossing the Green Line in the Ta'anach region. His arrival was an hour and 10 minutes late. A delay resulting from his stopping on the way many times to greet the Palestinian villagers crowded along the side of the road on his itinerary. It was the first time since the signing of a ceasefire agreement with Jordan that a crossing was opened in this sector. The convoy continued to Tel Megiddo, the Pope surveyed an IDF honor guard and was received at an official reception by President Zalman Shazar, Speaker of the Knesset Kaddish Luz, Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Prime Minister Abba Even, Zerach Verhaftig and Bechor-Shalom Sheetrit, President of The Supreme Court Justice Yitzhak Olshan, Director General of Government Ministries and Representatives of the Diplomatic Staff, headed by the Chief of Staff, Ambassador of the Soviet Union Mikhail Bodrov. The chief rabbi, Yitzhak Nissim, was absent from the ceremony, who refused to come and greet the pope, saying that his status as chief rabbi was equal to the status of the head of the church and that the pope had to come and visit Jerusalem. Many sided with his position and saw the descent of the heads of state to Megiddo as a national disgrace. Prime Minister Levy Eshkol rejected the criticism, saying: "We will go to the Jezreel Valley with our heads held high and meet him on Hebrew soil." b7topback
